ISE&S helps NJ based NFP nonprofits build targeted management and operational strategies aligned with the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. These concepts build social equity and can provide organizations with strategic advantages as well as improve outcomes for their stakeholders.
Specifically, ISE&S provides Health and Human Services non-profit organizations with research-based tools and expertise to effectively incorporate social equity into their practices. Health and Human services organizations provide critical services to vulnerable and underrepresented communities. As an employer of over 300,000 people and about 1.6 million volunteers, the NFP sector in NJ significantly contributes to the economy and the well-being of its communities.

CASE STUDY: ACKERMAN GRANT FUND
Ackerman Fund Grant and Activities Summary
I. Grant Overview
The Bud Ackerman Fund provided the Institute for Social Equity and Environmental
Sustainability (ISE&S) with a $3,750 grant (April 2022–October 2023) to support initiatives that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) in human service nonprofits.
The grant aimed to:
1. Break institutional barriers for minority groups entering the workforce.
2. Equip managers with cultural competence to foster inclusive environments.
3. Promote social justice by integrating equity-focused practices into organizational
operations.
II. Project Implementation
ISE&S collaborated with Kean University researchers to develop a data-driven approach for assessing DEIA practices in nonprofit organizations.
Activities included:

Literature Review & Data Collection: Conducted scoping research and compiled IRS data to identify human service nonprofits in New Jersey and New York City.

Interviews: Engaged nonprofit leaders in discussions on DEIA Focus Groups & practices, challenges, and improvement strategies.

Conference Presentations & Academic Contribution: Presented research findings at major conferences (NECoPA, NASPAA, ARNOVA).
III. Key Accomplishments

Focus Groups: Conducted two sessions (one in-person, one virtual) with nonprofit representatives from YMCA, Urban League, United Way, and Community Access

Unlimited, among others. Discussions centered on DEIA implementation challenges and best practices.

Organizational Engagement: Follow-up interviews were held with nonprofits (e.g., MEWSA YMCA, Community Access Unlimited) to assess their DEIA needs and provide tailored support.

DEIA Measurement Tool: Developed criteria for assessing DEIA integration in nonprofit management and operations, laying the foundation for a comprehensive database.
IV. Lessons Learned & Next Steps
This grant facilitated essential research, fostered nonprofit engagement, and laid the groundwork for ongoing DEIA development in human service organizations.

DEIA implementation is not a one-size-fits-all approach; nonprofits require customized strategies and sustained resources.

Despite limited participation, the project fostered meaningful engagement, enabling
organizations to refine their DEIA strategies. -
Future work will focus on expanding research and developing evidence-based tools for nonprofit practitioners.
